Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Croat National Council leader, Dragan Čović on Monday said that he expected EU foreign affairs high representative Josep Borrell to prompt an agreement on amendments to the election law and remove the blockade of state institutions when he visits the country this week.
Čović is also the president of the biggest Croat party, HDZ BiH.
“Mr Borrell is coming to attend a meeting between representatives of all three constituent peoples in order to adopt very clear conclusions to immediately resolve the issue and remove any political misunderstanding which must not undermine BiH’s functioning any longer,” Čović told a press conference in Mostar when asked about the continuation of negotiations on the election legislation reform.
The EU delegation in BiH said that Borrell’s visit will once again demonstrate the EU’s commitment and support to the region against a backdrop of the Russian war against Ukraine and its impact on Europe’s overall security.
Čović announced the resumption of the talks on the election reform with the U.S. and European mediators as well as the Bosniak side but also the Serb side which, according to Čović, is included in the process.
He added that over the past ten days he had online meetings with US Special Envoy Matthew Palmer and Managing Director at the EU’s External Action Service, Angelina Eichhorst regarding the completion of the process.
The international community’s High Representative in BiH, Christian Schmidt, voiced hope in Brussels on Monday that a new election law could be reached in BiH soon.
