Does Slavonia have clearly defined borders? I have done a bit of googling but could not find out. It would be nice if you could get Slavonia, Dalmatia etc highlighted on Google Maps, as you can for the Republika Srpska for example.

Sorry I know this is not really a Herceg-Bosna topic but some people must know!

In short, it doesn't, as it's a geographic, not an administrative region. Not everyone would agree on it's borders, but the map on Wikipedia looks about right (the red part, while green and pink would be in dispute).

well, eastern parts of Slavonia (like the town of Ilok) in this map are actually in Srijem.

Srijem is a micro-region, archaic term or whatever you want to call it, the same as Baranja, although they probably separated Baranja on the map, either because of the Danube or because it was acquired in 1945.

Slavonia in historical terms is quiet larger than present day geographical region, as a matter of facts Slavonia once incorporated Zagreb and much of present day Moslavina near Sisak. Old geographical (and political) region of Slavonia ends on the western sloaps of mount Gvozd (today mount is part of Gvozd municipality) where historical geographic region of Croatia(today Gorski kotar, Lika, Krbava, Primorje , Kvarner, Ravni Kotari and Dalmatinska Zagora) starts. This has changed because of Ottoman invasion which occupied most of Slavonia which resulted in "moving" of the old geographical borders towards east. Today Slavonia starts east of Moslavina and ends at western borders of Smyrna micro -region.

Green defines Croatian part of Baranja region which has never been part of Slavonia, in fact Baranja (Cro part+Hungary part) is as large as Slavonia.

Well, people from Ilok never say it's in Slavonia. They always say it's in Srijem. Or Srem. Whatever they are used to.

True.
Drava was the old border of Croatia and Hungary althou in southern Baranja sout Slavic nations were predominant (Croatians in present day Croatian Baranja and Serbs in eastern part of Baja triangle).

Thanks for the comments. Very interesting. I also note that there is no outline of Herzegovina on Google Maps although its borders are clearly defined as far as I know.

People who leved there (in Bačka and Baja triangle) were not Serbs, Zadar. They were south Slavs.
Serbisation of their's descendans came only with Turks. And in Baja Triangle and northern Bačka there were never a lot of Serbs...

Well I'm not too familiar with Baja triangle and northern Baranja althou that would explain the decision of Nikola Pašić in 1919 :wink

Interesting. All Serbs are actually Vlachs, Croats, Bulgarians, ancient Bosniaks, South Slavs etc, but all Croats are Croats from the beginning of time. :zubati
