A ‘Soviet vassal state’? UK’s Hunt slammed for gaffe on Slovenia trip

Citat:
Foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt in ANOTHER gaffe as he offends Slovenia on first official visit to the country by calling it former 'vassal state' of Soviet Union - months after he referred to his Chinese wife as 'Japanese'

Britain's Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has come under fire for wrongly labeling Slovenia a former 'vassal state' of the Soviet Union while on his first official visit to the country.

Mr Hunt was in the capital Ljubljana to discuss Brexit with his counterpart Miro Cerar, but the gaffe worthy of his predecessor Boris Johnson was unlikely to win him many allies in the central European country.

Far from being a puppet of the USSR, Slovenia was the wealthiest state of former Yugoslavia, a communist state which defied and distanced itself from the Soviets in order to build its brand of socialism under the leadership of Josip Broz Tito.

Yugoslavia also formed part of the Non-Aligned Movement - a group of states that chose to avoid political or economic affiliations with any major power blocs.

'This is my first visit to Slovenia as foreign secretary, not the first in my life, but my first in a professional capacity,' Mr Hunt said at a news conference today.

'And I'm really happy to be here, because as a fellow European country the UK is very proud of the transformation there has been in Slovenia over the last 30 years.

'A really remarkable transformation from a Soviet vassal state to a modern European democracy, a member of the EU, a member of Nato, a country with a flourishing economy, growing its tourism year in, year out, and this is really an example of Europe at its best.'

Mr Hunt was immediately criticized by former speaker of Slovenia's parliament Milan Brglez.

'The British foreign minister comes to Slovenia asking us for a favour (to discuss with the foreign minister how to avoid a no-deal Brexit) while arrogantly insulting us,' Brglez wrote on Facebook.

'We were never a "vassal state of the Soviet Union",' he added.

Brglez reprimanded Slovenian national assembly members, who appeared either to have not noticed the insult, or politely let it slide.

'At a minimum what I expect from my representatives is that they will react immediately when someone insults the state and its citizens. And not that they are meekly silent, perhaps not even noticing the insult.'

It is not the first time Mr Hunt had made an awkward mistake since he became Foreign Secretary last year.

In his first few weeks in the job, he accidentally referred to his Chinese wife Lucia as Japanese while on a visit to China.

Mr Hunt blamed the mishap on having just had a conversation with his hosts in Japanese - but it was particularly unfortunate as the two nations are bitter rivals.

He immediately corrected his 'terrible' error and later tweeted his 'apologies to the long-suffering Mrs H...'
