Police at Brussels airport have claimed at least 50 Islamic State supporters are working there as baggage handlers, cleaners and catering staff.

In an astonishing open letter, the officers said they have warned about the terrorist sympathisers whose security badges give them access to planes, but they remain employed.

The airport police, who are threatening to go on strike because of security deficiencies, also said they have raised the issue of terrorists scouting the airport to plan possible attacks.

Belgijski ministar pravosuđa Koen Geens potvrdio je kako je u petak uhićena i šesta osoba koja se sumnjiči da je bila povezana s terorističkim napadima u Bruxellesu.

Riječ je o bivšem borcu iz Sirije koji je služio zatvorsku kaznu.

‘Iz zatvora je izišao 15. ožujka i imao je elektronsku narukvicu za praćenje’, izjavio je ministar, a prenosi Reuters.

15.40 – Akcija policije u briselskoj četvrti Ettrerbeek gdje je pretraživana jedna zgrada je završena bez hapšenja, javlja Reuters. No, pojavila se informacija da u racijama u petak nije uhapšeno pet osoba nego šest. Očekuje se da će danas policija dati više informacija.

U briselskoj četvrti Etterbeek oko 13 sati je počela policijska racija vezana uz uhićenja terorista Islamske države koji su involvirani u nedavne napade u belgijskom glavnom gradu. Lokalni mediji javili su da je na terenu bilo najmanje 50 policajaca, snajperisti su bili na krovovima, a dio stambene četvrti je navodno i evakuiran. Propagandi CD-ovi organizacije Islamska država pronađeni su među osobnim stvarima dvojice vozača koji rade za Europski parlament u Bruxellesu i Strasbourgu, koji su otpušteni, piše u subotu njemački tjednik Der Spiegel.

Tjednik koji se poziva na izvore bliske slučaju uspostavlja vezu između nedavne odluke Europskog parlamenta da više ne koristi usluge privatnih tvrtka za prijevoz zastupnika, već da izravno zaposli vozače. Rezoluciju o tome su ovog tjedna izglasovali eurozastupnici u Strasbourgu. Tema je sporna među zastupnicima jer vlastiti vozači će za 50 posto povisiti troškove prijevoza, na oko 10 milijuna eura godišnje.

Ali Europski parlament objašnjava tu promjenu sigurnosnim razlozima dok Der Spiegel sumnja da slučajevi dvojice vozača nisu izolirani.

“Europski parlament ne komentira sigurnosna pitanja”, reagirala je glasnogovornica u Bruxellesu.

Ona je precizirala da se za proračun 2017. uključuje 110 radnih mjesta vozača, što će se izglasavati u jesen. Objasnila je da su dva razloga te promjene. Prvi je veća socijalna sigurnost vozača a druga što žele znati tko za njih radi i tko ulazi u zgrade u Bruxellesu i Strasbourgu. Prema jednom dužnosniku tvrtke Birtibin Limousines, koja je osiguravala vozače za parlament u Strasbourgu i djelomično za Bruxelles “niti jedan vozač nije otpušten,” i nikad ništa nije pronađeno u njihovim automobilima. ‘Many danced after attacks’: Muslim integration failure caused ‘cancer’ – Belgian Interior Minister

In an interview with a Belgian newspaper, Jan Jambon said that he regretted that a “significant” proportion of the Muslim community had been “dancing” in the streets following the attacks on March 22 in which 32 innocent victims and three suicide bombers were killed, and over 300 people injured.

“A significant section of the Muslim community danced when attacks took place,” Jambon told De Standaard newspaper as cited by AFP. Shocked with such reaction, the minister blamed Belgian integration policy which had failed to incorporate migrants and refugees into European society.

By way of example he said that residents of the Molenbeek neighbourhood in Brussels were very belligerent to both the authorities and the press during a raid which resulted in the arrest of the main suspect in the deadly Paris attacks last November which killed over 130 people.

“They threw stones and bottles at police and press during the arrest of Salah Abdeslam . That is the real problem. That migrants from the third or fourth generation turn openly against our society and have been willing to use violence or to justify it has to do with our policy,” Jambon said.

Based on the minister’s assessment, terrorists themselves are just a “boil” which is much easier to treat than the core of the problem which is “too deeply rooted” in the immigrant dominated parts of society where while the government “for many years ignored the warning signs.”

“Terrorists we can pick up, remove from society,” Jambon stressed, but those who openly support terrorism or attack the law enforcement during the arrest are a sign of“cancer that is much more difficult to treat.”

“We can do it, but not today or tomorrow. Politicians will have to surpass themselves,” he stressed, making it clear that there is now quick solution to this problem in the short term.

Belgium has a population of just 11 million people with about 6 percent being Muslim, Pew Research reports based on 2010 estimates. At the same time according to UN estimates the country is providing the most Islamic State (IS formerly, ISIS/ISIL) recruits per capita in Europe. Over 500 recruits from Belgium have gone abroad to fight with the jihadists since 2010. Many have returned home and now pose a threat to the entire continent.

An ISIS terrorist who blew himself up at Brussels airport had worked at the terminal for five years before the attack, it has been claimed.
Najim Laachraoui, one of two suicide bombers who targeted the airport on March 22, was already known to have worked at the European Parliament in the city several years ago.
It has now been claimed that the jihadist was working at the terminal through a temp agency for five years until 2012.

A report also claims that a hidden prayer room was found at Brussels Airport shortly before the atrocity, 'where radicalised staff would meet to pray in secret'.

Laachraoui, thought to have been the bomb-maker for the terror attacks in Paris last November, launched a suicide attack at Brussels airport on March 22 in coordinated attacks that also struck a metro station in the city, killing 32 people overall.

For five years until 2012, Laachraoui 'worked... at Brussels airport', according to Belgium's VTM reported, adding that he had been recruited by a temp agency.
It did not provide details about the kind of work Laachraoui was to have carried out there, but said that airport staff are usually subject to a security check before being given access badges. There has been no official confirmation of the report.

The report also said a hidden prayer room had been discovered at the terminal shortly before the attacks, 'where radicalised staff would meet to pray in secret'.
The airport shut the prayer room down at the request of police, VTM reported, adding that investigators have since drawn up a list of 'at least 50 radicalised airport employees'.
Traces of Laachraoui's DNA have been found at a Brussels apartment where the suicide belts for the Brussels attacks were made.

The 24-year-old one-time electrical engineering student is also suspected of being the bomb-maker for last November's Paris attacks that left 130 people dead.
Both attacks have been claimed by ISIS.

On April 6, the European Parliament said one of the bombers had held a summer cleaning job at its Brussels headquarters in 2009 and 2010. Speaking to AFP, a source close to the inquiry named that person as Laachraoui.

Belgian prosecutors believe Laachraoui went to Syria in February 2013 where he joined IS. He resurfaced last September, two months before the Paris carnage, when he was stopped by police on the Austria-Hungary border.

He was using the false identity of Soufiane Kayal and was travelling with Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving Paris attacks suspect.
The Brussels bombings were carried out just four days after Abdeslam was arrested in the Belgian capital after a massive manhunt.

The entire population of Belgium is to be issued with a ration of iodine tablets, months after warnings about the threat of Isil building a dirty bomb.

Iodine pills, which help reduce radiation build-up in the thyroid gland, had previously only been issued to people living within 20km (14 miles) of the Tihange and Doel nuclear plants.

Maggie De Block, the Health Minister, said that would be extended to 100km, covering the whole country of 11 million people, following advice from an expert council.

The pills will be sent to pharmacies, and the public would be ordered to collect their ration in the event of a meltdown. Children, pregnant women and those breast-feeding would be given priority.

It emerged following last month’s terrorist attacks that an Isil cell may have been plotting to kidnap a nuclear expert in order to build a “dirty bomb”. Eleven nuclear workers had their passes revoked.

Ibrahim and Khalid el-Bakraoui, the brothers behind the suicide strikes on Brussels airport and Metro, are believed to have been involve the plot to scatter radioactive material over a populated area.

A senior Belgian nuclear industry official was secretly filmed by jihadists late last year, according to the country’s nuclear authority, and the brothers were linked to the surveillance.

There are also concerns over Belgium’s ageing nuclear plants that have been subject to repeated safety warnings, including defects in pressure vessels and fires.

Last week Germany asked that the 40-year-old Tihange 2 and Doel 3 reactors be turned off "until the resolution of outstanding security issues".

The reactor pressure vessels at both sites have shown signs of metal degradation, raising fears about their safety. They were temporarily closed but resumed service last December.

Belgium's official nuclear safety agency (AFCN) rejected the German request, saying the two plants "respond to the strictest possible safety requirements."

The key figure in the suspected dirty bomb plot is Mohammed Bakkali, 28, from Brussels, who was arrested in November on suspicion of helping to plan the Paris massacre. Police raided his wife’s flat and found a ten-hour video taken by a camera hidden opposite the home of an executive at the Centre for the Study of Nuclear Energy in Mol, northern Belgium. The executive had access to radioactive isotopes at the country’s national nuclear research centre.

Belgijska policija upotrijebila je vodene topove u sukobima koji su izbili na kraju masovnog protesta protiv mjera štednja na kojem se u centru Brisela okupilo desetine hiljada demonstranata.

U sukobima je povrijeđeno nekoliko demonstranata i jedan policajac, prenosi Anadolu Agency (AA).

Oko 50.000 ljudi prošetalo je danas ulicama Brisela u znak protesta zbog socijalne i ekonomske politike belgijske vlade, a sindikati navode da će nove mjere utjecati na državno blagostanje.

Na kraju protesta, kada su se mnogi demonstranti počeli razilaziti, nekoliko desetina ljudi je počelo bacati kamenice u pravcu policije koja je reagovala upotrijebivši vodene topove.



Pod sloganom “Čaša se prelila”, protestima su se pridružili i vodeći sindikati ujedinjeni u suprotstavljanju novim mjerama vlade desnog centra koje predviđaju veću fleksibilnost radnika, duži radni staž i manje plate pod težim uslovima.

Sindikati kažu da je politika slobodnog tržišta vlade premijera Charlesa Michela u prethodne dvije godine koštala prosječnu belgijsku porodicu oko 100 eura mjesečno, dok su obećanja o novim radnim mjestima ostala neispunjena. Umjesto toga, sindikati zahtijevaju od vlade da se više angažuje u borbi protiv utaje poreza.

"Poslodavci mogu da zabrane hidžab"

Visoka savetnica Evropskog suda pravde rekla je da poslodavci u EU legitimno mogu da zabrane zaposlenima da nose muslimansku maramu na radnom mestu. Uslov je da je zabrana zasnovana na generalnom pravilu kompanije, a ne na predrasudi protiv određene veroispovesti. Advokat Džulijan Kokot je danas iznela svoje mišljenje nakon što je belgijski sud zatražio razjašnjenje o tome šta zabranjuju zakoni EU protiv diskriminacije, prenosi AP.

U Belgiji je zabeležen slučaj Samire Aršbite koja je otpuštena sa mesta recepcionara u jednoj bezbednosnoj kompaniji pošto je insistirala da joj se dozvoli da na poslu nosi islamsku maramu. Aršbita je podnela tužbu zbog diskriminacije u dva belgijska suda, ali su njene tužbe odbačene, te se obratila Kasacionom sudu Belgije, koji je zatražio mišljenje suda EU.

Kokot je precizirala da kompanija može zabraniti nošenje marame samo ukoliko je ta odluka zasnovana na generalnom pravilu kompanije kojim se zabranjuje nošenje vidljivih političkih ili verskih simbola na radnom mestu, a ne na predrasudi u pogledu određene vere.

Terror suspects are spotted near Euro 2016 fanzone in Brussels as police arrest 12 who 'plotted attack during Belgium-Ireland match'

Police in Brussels have arrested 12 people and raided dozens of homes after terror suspects were seen driving near a fanzone where Belgian fans will gather this afternoon to watch their team's Euro 2016 game against Ireland later today.

The Belgian team, known as the Red Devils, played the Republic of Ireland in Bordeaux this afternoon but it is thought Brussels was the target, possibly fans watching the match on giant TV screens in the city centre.

In the event the game passed off without incident, Belgium winning 3-0.

But Belgian prime minister Charles Michel said security would be stepped up at public events.

He said the nation should remain 'extremely vigilant, hour by hour' and security would stay at the second-highest level, meaning a threat of an attack was 'possible and likely'.

The broadcaster RTBF said terror suspects were seen driving on Friday near a fanzone in central Brussels, where today's game is being relayed from France on giant screens.

Earlier Farouk Özgünes, a reporter with Flemish public broadcaster VTM said: 'The suspects were planning to carry out attacks while the Red Devils were playing a match at the European Championships this weekend. Perhaps they were planning to commit another attack today in Brussels.'

Police said homes and garages were searched in 16 municipalities, mostly in and around Brussels.

The federal prosecutor's office said 'immediate intervention' had been required.

Europe is on high alert as the tournament is under way in neighbouring France.

Police said 40 people were taken in for interrogation, of which 12 were arrested.

Belgian police said the raids 'passed off without incident' and said 'no arms or explosives were found'.

They searched 152 garages and lock-ups in Brussels, Molenbeek, Schaerbeek, Anderlecht, Koekelberg, Sint-Agatha-Berchem, Evere, Frost, Boitsfort, Ganshoren, Zaventem, Ninove, Wemmel, Fleurus, Tubize and Liège.

A bomb squad unit was also called to the train station in the city of Antwerp after a suspect package was reported.

Belgian priest, 65, stabbed in his home when he 'refused to give asylum seeker money after letting him use his shower'

A priest has been stabbed in his own home when he allegedly refused to give an asylum seeker money after letting him use his shower.
Father Jos Vanderlee, 65, suffered injuries to his hands and tendons during the incident at his property in Lanaken, Belgium.
The asylum seeker knocked on the pastor's door to ask for help and whether he could use his shower, reports Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

But after he cleaned himself, the man asked the priest for money before allegedly stabbing him when the pastor said no.
Mr Vanderlee was rushed to a hospital 10 miles away in Genk with non life-threatening injures.
The priest is responsible for eight parishes in the local area and celebrated his 40th priesthood earlier this month.

Prosecutors said the incident happened at around 2.40pm local time on Sunday and the attacker is said to have fled the scene.
Authorities in Belgium have launched an investigation but they have stressed that the incident can't be linked to terrorism at this stage.
Marino Keulen, the mayor of Lanaken, said: 'Despite the fact that we are shocked, we must stress that this incident can not be linked to terrorist acts at this stage of the investigation.'
