Croatia's interior minister says the main route for migrants entering Europe will be shut the moment Austria and Germany decide to stop taking them in.

Vlaho Orepic said Monday "the moment migrants can no longer be accepted particularly in Austria, we have to stop reception and transit" of the people crossing Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia on their way to western Europe.

Austria has triggered a backlog of migrants along the Balkan route after last week setting a cap on the rate at which it would accept them. More than a million people fleeing wars and poverty reached Europe in 2015.

Nations along the Balkan route on Monday started joint controls of the flow through their territories.

Orepic says the migrants will be "carefully profiled" on the Macedonian border with Greece before they are allowed to proceed.

He told EU lawmakers Tuesday that NATO ships have already been doing monitoring work in the Aegean while mission details are sorted out.

Slovak leader says EU agreement may not stem migrant flow from Turkey
BRATISLAVA | BY TATIANA JANCARIKOVA AND JAN LOPATKA

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico speaks during an interview with Reuters in Bratislava, Slovakia, February 22, 2016.
REUTERS/DAVID W CERNY

It is likely the numbers of migrants coming to Greece from Turkey will not drop in the coming weeks despite a European Union agreement and the EU should take steps to prepare new options, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Monday.

Fico, who has made a tough stance on migration the cornerstone of his policies before a March 5 election, told Reuters the government was prepared to erect mobile barriers on borders with Austria and Hungary to direct the flow of migrants he fears will rise soon.

Slovakia has so far seen only a trickle of migrants across its territory on their way from Syria or Afghanistan to western Europe. It has taken a particularly strong stand against accepting any significant numbers of Muslims who Fico says could not integrate.

Fico said calls by Slovakia and other central European countries of the Visegrad Four - Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland - for strict border protection were winning acceptance across the EU as it grapples with the migration crisis and a number of countries cap the numbers they are willing to accept.

EU countries earlier this month approved a 3 billion euro ($3.32 billion) fund for Turkey to improve living conditions for refugees there in exchange for Ankara ensuring fewer of them migrate on to Europe.

The EU is counting on the deal to lower the number of asylum seekers arriving in Europe after more than one million streamed onto the continent in 2015, mainly by sea from Turkey, with figures indicating little sign of the flow ebbing so far this year.

The next two or three weeks would show if the agreement between the EU and Turkey to limit the flow of migrants was working and if Greece was meeting its obligations on border control, Fico said.

"If that does not work, and I am very pessimistic, and all of us in Europe will insist on proper protection of external borders, there will be nothing left but protecting the border on the line of Greece-Macedonia and Greece-Bulgaria," he said.

The plan was proposed by the Visegrad Four before last week's EU summit and won some sympathy from countries like Austria but was dismissed by Germany, which stressed the need to make the deal with Turkey work.

Fico said it was clear that a common solution was needed but at some point Greece may have to be let go and the border defense built at its northern border, even if it means an unbearable accumulation of migrants in Greece.

"There was a correct decision, for now, not to expose Greece ... to this situation but it is only a matter of time when we say that it is simply not possible to go on like this any more," he said.

Austria announced last week it would cap the daily numbers of people seeking asylum or passage to Germany.

Fico said this could lead to people trying to bypass bottlenecks on the border between Slovenia and Austria via different routes that could lead through Slovakia.

He said the government was ready to detain those not seeking asylum there and return them across the border. The authorities are ready to erect barriers on Hungarian and Austrian borders to direct the potential flow, he said.

"There is a big risk, and the weekend confirmed this, that migrants will try to go around this Slovenian-Austrian border and get north through Hungary to Slovakia and on to the Czech Republic and Germany," he said.

Hungarian police detained 501 migrants over the weekend who cut their way through Hungary's steel border fence, the highest number since it sealed off its southern borders in mid-October.

Austria's chancellor is citing parts of a letter from the EU's top refugee official critical of his country's cap on migrant entries to argue that Austria's move is warranted.

Werner Faymann says the letter from Dimitris Avramopoulos notes that "no one must be waved through" EU borders. He also says the letter stipulates that "someone who already had the chance to request asylum somewhere else in the European Union can be turned away."

As of last Friday Austria is allowing no more than 80 people a day to apply for asylum at its southern border points. It is also restricting the total number of those in transit to other EU nations further north to 3,200 a day.

Faymann, in comments to reporters Tuesday, said he is standing by the restrictions.

Up to 5,000 jihadis could be at large in Europe after returning from Islamic State training camps in the Middle East, the head of Europe’s police agency has warned.

Europol head Rob Wainwright said that between 3,000 and 5,000 jihadis could have re-entered the continent after training with the terror group in Syria and Iraq.

Speaking to German paper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, Mr Wainwright said the risk of a terror attack on the continent was now the highest for many years.

“Europe is currently facing the highest terror threat in more than ten years,” he said. “We can expect Isil or other religious terror groups to stage an attack somewhere in Europe with the aim of achieving mass casualties among the civilian population.”

Breaking Point: Europe Cannot Take Another Year of the Migrant Crisis, Danish PM Says

by NICK HALLETT20 Feb 2016820
The European Union cannot cope with one more year of the migrant crisis, Denmark’s Prime Minister has said.

Speaking to the media during British Prime Minister David Cameron’s EU negotiations yesterday, Lars Løkke Rasmussen warned that Europe was reaching breaking point in the ongoing crisis.

“We need to find solutions that work. Because we cannot handle yet another year with an influx like the one we saw last year,” he said. “Especially not if the burden continues to be borne by very few countries.”

Danish news agency Ritzau reports that Mr Rasmussen agreed with a German-backed plan to help Turkey stem the flow of migrants leaving its shores. The EU has promised to pay Turkey three billion euros if it agrees to do more to stop migrants travelling across the Mediterranean to Greece.

“Turkey is sitting with a sort of key,” Mr Rasmussen added. “The way the Turks take action will have an impact on how many come.”

Despite growing concerns at Europe’s ability to cope with the record number of migrants, analysts predict there will be no slow down this year. Earlier this week, Fabrice Blanche, visiting fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said a million people from Syria alone are likely to come to Europe this year.

His warning follows that of German Development Minister Gerd Müller, who said that up to 10 million people are likely to travel to Europe over the coming years.

Saying that only a tenth of potential migrants from Syria and Iraq had reached the continent so far, Mr Müller also warned of the impact of North Africa: “The biggest movements are ahead: Africa’s population will double in the coming decades. In the Sahara up to one million people have died trying to escape.”

He added that it is unlikely the Schengen visa-free zone will likely survive in the long run: “The protection of external borders is not working. Schengen has collapsed. A fair distribution of refugees has not taken place.”

Bulgarian Civilian Patrolling Border With Turkey Has Already Single-Handedly Captured 25 Illegal Migrants

by OLIVER JJ LANE21 Feb 2016153
A Bulgarian man who lives close to the Turkish border has been hailed a “superhero” by national media after he started using his spare time to patrol the border on his quad-bike (ATV), looking for illegal migrants.

Dinko Valev came across his new hobby while riding ATVs with friends in the backwoods beyond his home – just miles from the Turkish border. When he was jumped by a man claiming to be a Syrian migrant screaming “Allah” and who tried to steal his ATV to make good his escape, Mr. Valev took the man and others prisoner.

He is now calling for other Bulgarian civilians to join him in establishing unofficial “voluntary border squads” to support over-stretched police, and has even suggested the government start paying bounties for every illegal captured, to encourage others to get involved.

Speaking to Bulgarian television station BTV after his latest haul, taking his migrant head-count to 25 illegals, Mr. Valev explained that even as the interview was ongoing they and the camera crew were probably being watched by illegals in the woods. Describing the first time he caught an illegal on his ATV back in August, he said:

“Suddenly a man jumped out of the bushes in front of me. I did not know he was a migrant at first, so I stopped and got off the ATV to see what was going on.

“He rushed me trying to take me down, probably to steal the ATV. I punched him a couple of times and he went down, I kicked him 3 times for good measure and he started yelling “Allah-mallah”. He was wearing torn shoes, jacket, jeans and a rucksack.”

After Mr. Valev had beaten the man into submission, the other members of the illegal’s party also emerged from the woods. Another seven men approached, with three women and a child in tow. The men immediately rushed Mr. Valev, one of them attempting to stab him with a screwdriver while screaming “Allah!” he said, such was their desperation to steal his ATV.

But the Bulgarian “superhero” took down three of the men before the others surrendered. One of the migrants — who claimed to the Syrian refugees — spoke English, a common language for Mr. Valev who told them if they laid face-down on the ground and didn’t move, he wouldn’t kill them. There he waited with his prisoners for an hour and a half until police could arrive and perform formal arrests.

Mr. Valev has gone out on his ATV a number of times since. Although he goes out unarmed he explains the men he hopes to catch are dangerous, and if they aren’t stopped the whole of European civilisation is in danger: “One of them I chased for about 2 kilometres. The others surrendered quickly, they were scrawny.

“One fell into a big puddle and almost drowned in it, so I tied him to a tree and called the police. These people are very aggressive and have nothing to lose, they have left behind everything. We are in serious danger of being wiped out if we let them in.

“This is our country. Only jihadists, Syrians and the Taliban are trying to enter. In three sorties since August I’ve captured 25 men. Imagine how many people have passed through there in the rest of the time”.

Explaining that the police stuck to the more “lively” areas like the main A4 autobahn, the direct motorway from Bulgaria to Istanbul, and the big towns, in a separate interview with Bulgaria’s EraTV Mr. Valev explained in his neighbourhood “if we don’t help ourselves, no one else will”.

Mr. Valev is deeply unconvinced that the men he is capturing are what might be called genuine refugees. He remarked: “In France, those that did the attacks, were they fleeing? They destroy, they want to conquer. They try with a screwdriver to stab me, saying “Allah, Allah”. Here at the border, it is hell.

As the police have no resources to patrol the area and the army are unlikely to be deployed, Mr. Valev wants to start a border squad with other volunteers to patrol the area. Thanking God he has his own business and therefore can support himself, he regrets he only has the resources to take another two or three men with him on patrols, and called on the government to release funds to encourage other volunteers.

If the government would pay a bounty of €25 per illegal captured, he said “In half an hour I would fill my place with [volunteers]”. Yet Mr. Valev wouldn’t want to keep the money himself: “I would use it for donations to orphanages, rest homes for the elderly, the churches”.

This Bulgarian “hero” isn’t the only civilian standing-to at his nation’s border to defend it from illegals. Breitbart California reported in 2014 on the Minuteman project, a reformed group of civilians patrolling the Mexican border which was aiming to collect thousands of volunteers. In Europe, the Identitarian movement, labelled “hipster right wingers” has been staging regular protests at the Austrian border, forming a human fence to keep out illegals.

Top Economist: Merkel’s Migrant Policy Is ‘Morally Reprehensible’

by NICK HALLETT22 Feb 2016944
Angela Merkel’s open invitation for over a million migrants to come to Germany last year was a “colossal mistake”, a renowned economist has said.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Oxford academic Sir Paul Collier said that Merkel’s actions were “morally reprehensible” and it was unlikely the huge number of new arrivals would integrate into German society.

Sir Paul, who previously worked as director of the Development Research Group at the World Bank, told the paper: “Inviting all refugees to Germany was a colossal mistake by Angela Merkel, especially since she had obviously made no preparations for the resulting influx.”

He said condemned the morality behind this invitation as “she has virtually asked people to swim to Europe.”

“That’s like Russian roulette: find a people smuggler and hope that your boat does not sink. What is there to defend?”

One of the strongest tendencies of people fleeing warzones, Sir Paul said, is to stick together in homogeneous communities. This makes assimilating them into wider society much harder than for other types of migrant.

“Amid chaos, these people want to preserve their normal lives as much as possible. So they want to stay as close as possible to people from their homelands in order to maintain a last bit of stability.”

He added that recent history also shows how difficult it will be to assimilate the huge number of new arrivals into German society.

“Germany has never been particularly good at integrating migrants,” he said. “Turkish migrants took a very long time to become part of mainstream society.”

He also pointed out that before Angela Merkel “wanted to be a saint”, she had previously stated that multiculturalism in Germany had failed.

In 2010, the German Chancellor gave a speech in which she criticised the “multikulti” concept, telling members of her party: “We kidded ourselves a while, we said: ‘They won’t stay, sometime they will be gone’, but this isn’t reality.” She added that the attempt to build a multicultural society “has failed, utterly failed.”

“I do not see why that should have suddenly changed,” Sir Paul said.

He went on the say that it is not racist to oppose the huge migrant influx, and criticised the media narrative around the subject.

“I have the impression that the public discourse in Germany works like this: Holy Merkel against the racists. I think that is defamatory. There are good reasons for scepticism.”

He lamented the “failure of mainstream parties to make a policy that appears at least halfway sensible” and said this failure had “triggered panic” in many people.

He also warned that poorer Germans had “tangible existential fears” as jobs become harder to find and the rich seem to care less about their concerns.

“There are clear signs that solidarity rapidly decreases in societies with a high proportion of immigrants,” he said.

“The miracle of the nation state is that it creates a common identity and makes solidarity possible. Too much immigration endangers this arrangement.
