Frustrated by California's Covid-19 lockdown policies, Tesla relocated its headquarters to Austin, Texas in 2020 next to the company's gigafactory. However, in 2023 Tesla announced that it was opening its engineering headquarters back up in Palo Alto. In 2024, Musk also moved SpaceX's headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Brownsville, Texas, though the company maintains its Hawthorne facility.
