The Edina Community Lutheran Church introduced a ‘non-binary’ God in a recent service

Pastor Jeff Sartain commenced the service with a ‘land acknowledgment,' drawing from contemporary social movements. The service marked a significant break from traditional Christian teachings.

The “sparkle creed,” as presented by Pastor Anna Helgen, portrayed Jesus Christ as having ‘two dads’ and referenced God with plural pronouns, leading to widespread condemnation from traditional Christian communities.

Critics argue that such revolutionary reinterpretations could destabilize foundational Christian beliefs. Although the Church's view purportedly aligns with the 21st-century sociopolitical climate, it's seen as betraying the core Christian values. Critics warn of resulting discord within the Church, calling it a serious spiritual skirmish for Christian communities.

The Sparkle Creed is a version of the Apostle's Creed modified to include the LGBTQ+ community. The incident took place on Sunday, June 25, with co-pastor Anna Helgen leading the congregation. She recites that God is "non-binary," that Jesus Christ had "two dads", and that "love is love."


I invite you to rise in body or spirit and let us confess our faith today in the words of the Sparkle Creed.

I believe in the non -binary God whose pronouns are plural. I believe in Jesus Christ their child who wore a fabulous tunic and had two dads and saw everyone as a sibling child of God.

I believe in the rainbow spirit who shatters our image of one white light and refracts it into a rainbow of gorgeous diversity.

I believe in the church of everyday saints as numerous, creative, and resilient as patches on the AIDS quilt. Whose feet are grounded in mud and whose eyes gaze at the stars in wonder.

I believe in the calling to each of us that love is love is love. So beloved, let us love. I believe, glorious God, help my unbelief. Amen.
