In the United States there is a Senator who claimed to have Native American ancestry. She recently took a DNA test and she found out that her Native American DNA is negligible. This has prompted Native Americans to criticize her for claiming them and acting like she is a member of their group.

This dovetails nicely with the situation in BiH where we have Željko Komšić, who claims to be Croatian based on his father's background. I would like to know what his parents declared him as on his birth certificate and how he declared himself in the most recent census in BiH. While there are those that argue that he is Croatian based on his father and that qualifies him to be a candidate, I beg to differ.

I argue that there is far more to being Croatian than a piece of paper or claim that you are. If we go by paper, why not start nominating BiH Muslims who have Croatian citizenship to run for Croatian candidate for the BiH Presidency. You could argue that to get Croatian citizenship you have to demonstrate some belonging to the Croatian people - unless you live in Croatia and become a naturalized citizen.

We know what Željko Komšić is and it isn't Croatian. We also have his records from his previous mandates as Croatian member to the BiH presidency that proves how little he cares about his constituency:

It's not enough to claim to be Croatian. You must also be there for your people, be a part of the community, and not only when it's convenient or when you want something -- like the BiH presidency.
