That´s my question. Which was the biggest battle during bosnian war??

Regarding Croatian war, it was probably Vukovar.

In Bosnia, the most famous battle is that of Sarajevo, for sure, as it was broadcasted wordwide.

But I was told years ago that the biggest battle was that of posavina, from April until the fall of B. Brod in fall 1992. And specially the battle for Derventa in June-July apparently was a deadly one.
If one checks the losses of HVO 103 (derventa) and 101 (b. brod) brigades in only a few months time it looks quite possible.

Its hard to say because its hard to make difference between a battle, an operation, an offensive and military campaign.

We can`t say that siege of Sarajevo was a battle, its hard to find an adequate word. Also,

And also, what is the criterion for the biggest battle? Number of dead? Number of engaged soldiers and quantity of weapons? Size of the captured territory?

Posavina (Jun-Oct 1992) without a doubt, the Serbs claim they utilised 48.000 troops during the campaign. I'll have to consult the old "CIA - Balkan battlegrounds" for confirmation.

Bobovac: you´re right, let´s imagine what could be the criterium to define the concept of biggest battle:
- Number of engaged troops.
- Quantity of military hardware used: tanks, artillery, aircraft, helicopters...
- Resistance from the oponent side.
- Duration of the battle.
- Number of dead and wounded military personnel.
From my understanding, the biggest battle must have been in 1992; in 1995 there was little serb oposition to croatian offensives and Bosnian muslim-Croat war in 1993 could be, generally speaking, rather categorized as a low intensity conflic, although with some violent outbursts.
Siege of Sarajevo or Srebrenica, although with high loss of life, might not really be defined as battles.

In the end, campaign for Posavina and battle of Derventa could fit to this definition, I know there was even aircraft used by both sides (including one croatian miG21 shot down in derventa).
And maybe the fighting in May and the June 92 offensive to take Mostar from the serb side, although I do not know if there was a stiff resistance.

Maybe one of the most intensive was operation "Lipanjske zore".

Well, the biggest battles or operations in 1992 were Operation Korridor in Posavina, operation Lipanjske zore ( Dawns of June) - Liberation of Mostar and Capljina and Stolac from Serbian army... then, very important but unsuccessful Muslim operation to unblock Sarajevo in august and september 1992.
There was also the wery important battle for the town of Jajce - Operation Vrbas '92, june-october 1992, because of the huge concentration of troops and weapons at such small place and and the fierceness of the battle and spent ammunition.



I will not completely agree with you. "Little serb oposition"? Serbian oposition was strong and tough, but they but they could not match with professional brigades of the Croatian Army. In Operation Mistral was almost shattered an entire corpus of Serbian Army (2. Krajiški korpus).

Also, in june of 1995 Muslims started their a new big operation to unblock Sarajevo (again unsuccessful). It lasted until the end of July, and by the involvement of soldiers, equipment and weapons, it was a very large and significant operations (over 600000 soldiers). By the he publication: - CIA Balkan battlegrounds, Muslim losses in the operation were estimated at about 1000 dead and 3000 wounded.

Bobovac, may be I did not express myself correctly; rather than "little serb opposition" I could say that the serbs in 95 were most times outflanked and sometimes had to leave positions in order not to be encircled; I might be wrong, but I think there were not that many casualties in those offensives.

By the way, according to wikipedia, from April to October 92, 1224 croat soldiers were dead in Posavina; I suppose this refers only to HVO and HV and to this should be added the bosniak TO and armija casualties.
