Need to understand the difference between the words "русский" (written as russian) and "россиянин" (written as russian too). Русский is slavs nation, россиянин is the name of citizenship. Total population of Russian is called the россияне (russian). 80% of the total population consider themselves to be русскими. Russia has 30% slavs of the total population.
Russian people have problems with self-identification. There are 2 categories of Russian people: Russian Slavs and Russian internationalists.
Russian Slavs are divided into several categories: Russian Orthodox and Russian atheists. They consider themselves Russian Slavic nation. Between them there are contradictions. Some Russian Slavs did not consider themselves to be Russian, for example, the Kuban Cossacks. Also some people in regions can identify themselves as independent ethnic groups. Also Russian nationalists have friction.
Russian internationalists believe that the Russian nation is a international nation. Russian International nation reminds of civilization, as the Americans nation. Some Russian Slavs consider themselves Russian internationalists themselves (for example, the Slavs Socialists). Also if a person does not know or can not identify their nationality, he calls himself a русским.
