Where were you all this time? You were absent for long time. :D

Some nuances (nijanse):

"Where have you been", sound better then "where were you". "Where were you" can be correct, but I would say not in this particular case. Also "you were absent for a long time". Nije jasno zasto ide "a" ali tako se kaze. Time nije brojiva imenica. Mozda je objasnjenje to da se zapravo zeli reci "you were absent for a long interval", a interval jest brojiva imenica (one interval, two intervals, three intervals...). Pa onda, po nekoj ekvivalenciji, ako na interval ide "a" onda ga zalijepis i na time. To ne znaci da ide "a" uvijek ispred time, nikako. Takodjer, tocnije je "you've been absent for a long time".

"Where were you" fits better when referring to being away "during" some past event (not extended period), or at least very short period that can be considered a past event or short lasting action. Npr. "Where were you last night while I was in the club?" "What were you watching on TV* while I was in the bathroom?".

Examples are best, so a few (http://www.gingersoftware.com/content/g ... -vs-a-few/) examples:

Where were you when the war started? (simple past, tocka u proslosti)
Where had you been during the war? (past perfect, dulji i dobro definiran period u proslosti, zna se kad je poceo i zavrsio)
Were you fighting during the war? (past continuous, akcija u kracem periodu u proslosti, za ovo cak nisam siguran)
Where were you when the war ended? (opet simple past, tocka u proslosti)
Where have you been since the war ended? (present perfect, radnja koja ima dobro definiran pocetak i koja jos uvijek traje)
Where are you now? (present)

"Were" je za tocku u proslosti (simple past, ili past continuous ako se ipak radi o kracem periodu u bliskoj proslosti), "had been" je za duzi interval u malo daljoj proslosti, "have been" je za interval koji jos uvijek traje. "I've been living in BiH since I was born." Been usually describes some kind of state (stanje). Ima jos par proslih vremena ali bolje ih ne koristiti. :zubati

Sometimes even native speakers would not agree which tense is the most appropriate one, especially when you need to pick between simple past, past perfect, past continuous and past perfect continuous (some of them not even considered above). It can get quite confusing. For that reason, ocasionally there is some freedom in using them (whatever tense you pick, it's ok - so pick the one you are most common with), but sometimes it's just definitely incorrect to use anything else but a specific tense as it sounds wierd.

And I wouldn't be surprised if I made some mistakes here. :zubati

Some ppl just use simple past for everything. :D I think everyone should learn at least present perfect, as it is extremely common in conversation.

*Sto se tice TV, iz nekog razloga se kaze "The song was on TV", ali se kaze "The song was on THE radio". Razlog nitko ne zna, to je tako i prihvati.

It's weird.

Definition: The present perfect simple expresses an action that is still going on or that stopped recently, but has an influence on the present. It puts emphasis on the result.

In accordance with this above-mentioned definition, "Where were you..." would be more suitable in my case. But spoken English has its own rules. :zubati

Well I wouldn't agree on this.
The action in question is "being absent" i.e. "not being here", not "being here".

1. You see him (at that moment he stops being absent)
2. A few seconds passes
3. Then you ask him "Where have you been all the time? Haven't seen you for months!"

So his absence is an action that "stopped recently, but has an influence on the present".

This example is not mine, but it nicely explains:

Citat:
I haven't seen him

means, essentially, I have not seen him recently. (npr. nisi ga vidio vec 3 mjeseca)

I didn't see him

means, I did not see him at some particular time.

proverb = izreka

Example:
"Trust, but verify".

Citat:
Suzanne Massie, a writer on Russia, met with President Ronald Reagan many times between 1984 and 1987.[1] She taught him the Russian proverb, "Доверяй, но проверяй {Doveryai, no proveryai} (trust, but verify) advising him that "The Russians like to talk in proverbs. It would be nice of you to know a few. You are an actor – you can learn them very quickly."[2] The proverb was adopted as a signature phrase by Reagan, who subsequently used it frequently when discussing U.S. relations with the Soviet Union.

Russian is similar to the South Slavic languages. :zubati It's really pity that we don't have an universal Slavic language.

Citat:
"Доверяй, но проверяй".

Translation of the word "verify" is the same in Croatian and Russian and the word "no" is likewise often used in Croatian for introducing something contrasting in a sentence with what has already been mentioned.

Some languages have grammatical gender, some do not. English doesn't, which is nice as it just introduces a complication and has no role in conveying any type of information.

Tho English doesn't have grammatical gender for noun classifications (stol is masculine in Croatian, tabelle is feminine in German - die tabelle, while table has no gender in English), some things do have gender in the sense of addressing them with personal pronouns (he, she, it, we, they):

ships are feminine

Citat:
After leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912, Titanic called at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland before heading west to New York.[2] On 14 April 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles (600 km) south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time.

However this is not so important in English, you can just say "it" as a correct alternative.
