Is Citluk a thing of the past? They want to restore the name as old as 7 centuries
The Herzegovinian municipality of Citluk could soon change its name to Brotnjo as it was called 716 years ago. This would finally realize the initiative that has been living in that Herzegovinian region since the 1990s.
The initiative to use the name Čitluk has appeared several times since the 1990s until today, but it has never been realized, although the locals have been calling Čitluk Brotnja in jargon for a long time.
The mayor of the Herzegovinian municipality, Marin Radišić, confirmed that the seven-century-old name could soon be officially returned to Čitluk and that certain activities are already being undertaken to rename Čitluk into Brotnjo.
He told the Bosnian edition of Vecernji list that they have already determined the procedure that needs to be done and that he believes that they will start soon. The municipality of Čitluk is located in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, and was founded in 1955 with its headquarters in Čitluk. Municipality Day was established after the first democratic elections and is celebrated on May 24 when the name Brotnjo is first mentioned.
The oldest preserved date of written mention of the name Brotnjo, ie today's Municipality of Čitluk, dates from May 24, 1306 in an act of the Duke of Dubrovnik and is preserved in the Historical Archives in Dubrovnik. It is one of the spatially smaller municipalities in BiH with an area of 181 square kilometers and according to the last census from 2013 has 18,140 inhabitants.
Although it is one of the geographically smallest municipalities, it is one of the most economically developed municipalities in the Federation of BiH, and the most important industry is tourism, thanks to Medjugorje, which is the most visited pilgrimage and tourist destination in BiH.
The area of the Municipality of Čitluk is also the largest vineyard in BiH, and almost every family has its own vineyard and wine.
Here, the vines have been processed for centuries and the best autochthonous wines are drunk, which in recent years have occupied increasingly important places in markets throughout BiH and beyond the borders of our country.
