Ceremonial unveiling of the monument to Petar Herceg Tomich in the Park of Croatian Bans
The unveiling ceremony of the monument to Peter Herceg Tomić (Tonić) will be held on Thursday, December 7 in the Park of Croatian Bans in Ljubuški, starting at 11:15 a.m.
Petar Herceg was a Croat born in 1893 in the village of Prolog near Ljubuški. He arrived in the USA as a 20-year-old and joined the army. After World War I, he joined the Navy and was chief engineer on the destroyer USS Utah. During the Japanese attack on the fleet in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, with his selfless act, sacrificing his own, he saved the lives of about a hundred crew members of the American ship USS Utah.
The accompanying destroyer USS Tomich was named after this brave Ljubušak, who was declared an honorary citizen of the US state of Utah, as well as one building of the US Navy NCO Academy (Tomich Hall), while his native Ljubuški is erecting a monument to him that will remind future generations of his greatness, courage , selflessness and sacrifice, they said from the City of Ljubuški.
