Record month for Mostar Airport


It’s not only Italian football celebrities making their way to Medjugorje via Mostar Airport.

Thousands of other Italian pilgrims are using the terminal for mainly short-break pilgrimages of three to five days that coincide with the apparitions of Our Lady to the visionary Mirjana which take place on the second day of each month.

A spokesperson for the airport Mark Djuzel is hoping that the current trend will soon bring the number of passengers using Mostar airport back up to pre-war levels.

Last month, 11,922 passengers arrived at the airport and the largest number to pass through on a single day was 2,404, on June 29 in advance of the apparition date of July 2.

A week earlier 14 charter planes landed at Mostar, another record for one day flights.

Djuzel said that the expected number of passengers for the year should reach 65,000.

They got large Kosovar communities around Europe, and it is very inconvenient to travel to Kosovo by roads.

I was shocked when I saw that Malta international airport (so we are talking about stupid island in the middle of nowhere), had much more passengers than Pleso.
And, Zagreb and Belgrade are not even in the TOP 100 european most busiest airports.

I also think, Prishtina's place is because of Kosovo's numerous diaspora.

About 150.000 passengers per year is an objective assessment in the near future. 200.000 and 250.000 is a very optimistic forecast.

Italians will expand Mostar airport

Airports in Italy proceed to form strategic partnership with Mostar International Airport close to Medjugorje. Coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the plan will enlarge the airport, expand the number of passenger lines, ensure better safety, and educate the staff.

Mostar International Airport is on the brink of a new era, a spokesman of Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said after Italian airport leaders recently went ahead in forming a strategic partnership with the airport 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Medjugorje.

The ministry coordinates the entire process on behalf of Italy.

“In Italy, there is great interest in the airport of Mostar, especially because of Medjugorje. Therefore, the beginning of the negotiations about a strategic partnership means entering a new era of operations for the airport of Mostar” Italian ministry counselor Sladjan Topuzovic tells the Croatian daily Vecernji List..

“There was principal agreement, and hope that things will soon be made concrete” Sladjan Tupozovic further says of the Italian airport leaders’ recent meeting with leaders of the city of Mostar.

The closer cooperation with Italian partners will enlarge the airport, bring many more aircrafts to the runway, and ensure safer operations, partly due to training the airport personel for these new conditions. A development plan will soon be presented to the public, Vecernji List further writes.
