December 3, 2009A Bosnian Islamist was found guilty and sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing his friend who refused to allow his minor daughter to marry him.
Smajo Abdurahmanovic, 30, from the central town of Zavidovici killed his friend Velid Zahirovic in June this year in “an extremely cruel manner” by shooting him three times from close proximity, the court in the central town of Zenica ruled.
The court found that the motive for the murder was the refusal by Zahirovic to allow Abudrahmanovic to marry his 9-year-old daughter.
The court has also ordered Abdurahmanovic to pay some 30,000 euros in damages to Zahirovic’s wife and two children.
According to local media, Abudrahmanovic who follows the strict interpretation of Islam known as Wahhabism, had in the past also been unofficially married to a minor.
Abdurahmanovic’s previous “wife” had been 14 when she went to live with him with the consent of her father. She reportedly escaped from their shared home after three years during which she was severely beaten and abused.
The large majority of Bosnian Muslims follow relaxed and tolerant local traditions of religious observance, but a few adopted the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam known as Wahhabism during the country's 1992-95 war.
According to expert estimates, in the population of some two million Bosnian Muslims there are up to 3,000 supporters of Wahhabism.
