Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic has said that a year and a half ago his cabinet was thinking about linking the southernmost Croatian city of Dubrovnik with the rest of Croatia by a road passing through Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the plan was scrapped as Croatia found no interlocutor in the other country.
The only Bosnia-Herzegovina coastal town of Neum cuts off the Croatian Adriatic coast, and the Croatian government wants to resolve the issue of better transport connection of the southernmost tip of its country, that is the Dubrovnik region, with the rest of Croatia after Croatia's admission to the European Union.
Addressing a special session held by Dubrovnik's council on Sunday on the occasion of the Day of St. Blaise, the city's patron saint, Milanovic said that after Bosnia and Herzegovina showed no interest in the concerned road, Croatia "has turned to (a future) Peljesac Bridge on which we are working for a year, being confident that this plan will be realised, as we have built expensive motorways, and now we expect Europe to help us to build the bridge. The bridge is a small thing for Europe but a big thing for Croatia," Milanovic added.
In connection with motorways, Milanovic said that a motorway from Zagreb had reached Ploce, the southern seaport.
"Unfortunately, there is not sufficient traffic along that highway as there are not many Croatians, only 4.5 million, and even if there were 12 million of us, it wouldn't suffice," the premier said.
"Our aim is to go ahead and direct the transport of cargo from central Europe through the Seaport of Ploce which will make the motorway busy," Milanovic said.
In attendance at the council's special session were Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic, Culture Minister Andrea Zlatar Violic, the president's envoy and parliament officials.
