Austria Threatens to Close Saudi-Backed Interfaith Dialogue Center

by Soeren Kern

http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/5194/ ... di-kaiciid

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has expressed public outrage over the refusal of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue to speak out against the flogging of Raif Badawi, a Saudi human rights activist and blogger who has been sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for "insulting Islam."

"Saudi Arabia practices a form of Sharia law that is one of the most brutal systems in the world... Does the Austrian Foreign Ministry really want to give such a state the opportunity to build an international propaganda center in Austria?" — Editorial, Die Presse.

"An inter-religious dialogue center that remains silent when it is time to speak out clearly for human rights is not worthy of being called a dialogue center. It is a silence center." — Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann.

"If the center wants to remain only an economic center with a religious fig leaf, then Austria should no longer be a part of it. In any event, Austria will not allow itself to be threatened or blackmailed." — Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann.

The Austrian government has threatened to close a controversial Saudi-sponsored religious dialogue center because of the latter's failure to condemn the flogging of a Saudi human rights activist and blogger.

Saudi Arabia has responded to the threat by issuing a counter-threat to move the permanent headquarters of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries [OPEC] out of the Austrian capital of Vienna.

The dust-up began in mid-January, when Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann expressed public outrage over the refusal of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue [KAICIID] to speak out against the flogging of Raif Badawi, a Saudi human rights activist and blogger who has been sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for "insulting Islam."

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann (left) has expressed public outrage over the refusal of the KAICIID to speak out against the flogging of Raif Badawi (right), a Saudi human rights activist and blogger who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for "insulting Islam."
That KAICIID, which is headquartered at the Palais Sturany in the heart of Vienna and has the status of an international organization, is ostensibly dedicated to "serving humanity" by "fostering dialogue" between the world's major religions, in order to "prevent conflict."

The KAICIID says that while it condemns all forms of violence, it has not spoken out specifically about Badawi because it does not want to get involved in the internal affairs of other countries.

The center was inaugurated in November 2012 in an elaborate ceremony attended by more than 650 high-profile guests from around the world, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the foreign ministers of the center's three founding states, Austria, Spain and Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh, which is financing the KAICIID for the first three years at an annual budget of 10-15 million euros ($11-17 million), has promised that there will be "zero politics, zero influence in the center."

But the primary focus of the King Abdullah Center has been to promote a program called "The Image of the Other," which examines "stereotypes and misconceptions" about Islam in education, the media and the Internet.

The KAICIID has been mired in controversy from the very beginning, largely because of Saudi Arabia's dismal record on human rights. Some critics have charged that the center is an attempt by Riyadh to establish a permanent "propaganda center" in central Europe from which to spread the conservative Wahhabi sect of Islam.

Others say the Saudis deliberately chose Vienna to serve as the headquarters for the new organization because of the city's historic role in preventing Islam from overrunning Christian Europe during the Siege of Vienna in 1529 and the Battle of Vienna in 1683. The Saudis, they say, are simply fighting a new phase of a very old conflict.

The center-left Green Party, which governs Vienna in a coalition, has said that the KAICIID glorifies a country "where freedom of religion and opinion are foreign words." In a statement, the party advised:

"Austria should not allow itself to be misused in this way, to allow itself to be involved in whitewash by a repressive Saudi regime which is using this center as a fig leaf for its dishonorable human rights situation."

The center-right newspaper Die Presse, in an editorial published in October 2011, warned:

"The Austrian government needs to ask itself whether it knows what it is doing: Is it not known that as the state religion of Saudi Arabia, Wahhabism is fiercely opposed to other religions and uses 'intercultural dialogue' as a means for aggressive proselytizing?

"To clarify: Wahhabism is the only officially recognized and allowed religion in Saudi Arabia. Other forms of Islam and other religions are banned and persecuted by the state. Saudi Arabia is the only Islamic state in which there is no church, no synagogue and no other place of worship of any other religion. Shiite Muslims have been systematically discriminated against for decades. Jews are even forbidden to enter the Kingdom.

"Saudi Arabia practices a form of Sharia law that is one of the most brutal systems in the world. Saudi Arabia has at all times rejected the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. Women may not drive a car and can be punished by flogging. Corporal punishment, including amputations and executions, are part of everyday life in the country. Just two weeks ago a Sudanese immigrant in Saudi Arabia was publicly beheaded for 'sorcery.' Saudi Arabia is one of the few countries in the world in which the death penalty is enforced even on teenagers.

"Does the Austrian Foreign Ministry really want to give such a state the opportunity to build an international propaganda center in Austria?"

Chancellor Faymann is the most senior Austrian politician to suggest that the KAICIID should be closed. In a January 16 interview with the newspaper Der Standard, Faymann said:

"This center does not fulfill at all the mandate of dialogue and is silent about basic issues of human rights. We will not tolerate this. It is clear to me from today's perspective that we should get out."

In a January 20 interview with public radio Oe1, Faymann said:

"An inter-religious dialogue center that remains silent when it is time to speak out clearly for human rights is not worthy of being called a dialogue center. It is a silence center.

"It cannot possibly be that we have a center in Austria with the title 'inter-religious dialogue' while at the same time someone who actually engages in this is in prison and fearing for his life."

Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, however, is urging restraint. In a 22-page report published on January 27, he argues that closing the KAICIID completely could have a litany of unintended economic, diplomatic and political repercussions, including causing major damage to Vienna's image as a host city for many international organizations.

Kurz is especially concerned that Saudi Arabia might make good on threats, made to the Austrian Ambassador to Riyadh, to relocate the headquarters of OPEC away from Vienna, where it has been based since 1965. Saudi Arabia is OPEC's biggest oil producer and its most influential member.

In any event, the report concludes: "Closing the center would do nothing to improve the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia."

The report, which states that there are "deficiencies in the center's structure, working methods and communication policy," proposes an alternative course of action: the KAICIID should be fundamentally reformed.

The first step in this reform apparently involves the removal of KAICIID's deputy director, former Austrian Justice Minister Claudia Bandion-Ortner, who has been criticized for downplaying Saudi Arabia's human rights record. In an interview with the newsmagazine Profil in October 2014, for example, Bandion-Ortner defended the desert kingdom. "Beheadings do not occur there every Friday," she said. "That is nonsense."

Faymann has agreed — for now — to consider proposals for a "substantive, structural reorganization" of the KAICIID which, at a minimum, would require the center to "make a clear commitment to religious freedom" and a "strong commitment to human rights." If the center cannot be reformed along these lines, however, Faymann says Austria should initiate an "orderly retreat."

Faymann remains skeptical that the KAICIID can be reformed. In a January 28 interview with the Wiener Zeitung, he said:

"For me, I see no basis [for reform] either now or in the future. If this center says it stands for interreligious dialogue, then it must do so. But if it wants to remain only an economic center with a religious fig leaf, then Austria should no longer be a part of it. In any event, Austria will not allow itself to be threatened or blackmailed."

In the meanwhile, Kurz plans to travel to Riyadh during the second half of February to de-escalate the crisis in bilateral relations. It remains unclear whether he will ask Saudi authorities for the release of Raif Badawi.

Italy on Alert Over Jihadist Threat From Balkans

6 March 2015

Italian authorities are increasingly concerned by the number of radicalized Muslims emigrants from the Balkans joining the ranks of the Islamist militants.

In a video released on February 15, after the murder of 21 Egyptian Christians in Lybia, a masked militant from the Islamic State of Syria and al-Sham, ISIS, points toward the Italian shore and warns: “We will conquer Rome by the will of Allah.”

Bloodcurdling ISIS threats to the West are nothing new. But, documents from the Italian security agencies, seen by BIRN, show Rome is increasingly worried by the threat of terrorists coming from the Balkans as well as from North Africa and the Middle East.

According to one document seen by BIRN, the Italian Interior Ministry has identified five radical cells from the Balkans operating in Italy and recruiting jihadist fighters for the Islamic State.

The cells are located in Milan, Rome, Liguria, Lucca and Siena, infiltrated into communities of Muslim emigrants from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Bosnia

So far, eight of the 59 people that Italian security agencies have identified as joining radical Islamic groups fighting in Syria and Iraq come from the Balkans. Four have already died in the Syrian war.

Because of its geographical proximity, Italian authorities are worried that ties between radical preachers coming from the Balkans and local Muslim communities could turn the country into a centre of radical Islamist activity.

Since the civil war started in Syria, several hundred Muslims from the Balkans have joined militant organizations like the al-Nusra front and ISIS.

The International Center for the Study of Radicalization, ICSR, a think tank based in King's College, London, believes the number of fighters from the Balkans that have joined jihadist groups in Syria totals 632.

Last week, two imams and seven of their supporters went on trial in Albania a year after their arrest, accused of recruiting dozens of fighters for ISIS and the al-Nusra front.

The indictment says imams Bujar Hysa and Abdurrahim Balla facilitated the recruitment of 70 fighters from Albania between 2012 and 2014 through their mosques on the outskirts of Tirana.

Since the start of the conflict, 10 Albanians have lost their lives fighting in Syria, while 30 others have already returned home and are under the constant observation of law-enforcement agencies.

In September 2014, meanwhile, the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina arrested a radical imam named Bilal Bosnic under an operation codenamed “Damask.”

BIRN has learned that agents from Italian anti-terror units in the cities of Bergamo and Cremona, which have large immigrant populations from the Balkans, took part in the operation.

Bosnic held inflammatory preaching tours in Italy in 2011. In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper, Corriere Della Sera, in August 2014 Bosnic declared that jihadist recruits had their eye on Italy.

“Italy is a very important country for us because we believe the whole world will become one Islamic State,” he said. “Even the Vatican will be Muslim,” Bosnic added.

Bosnic is not the only radical imam from the Balkans to have preached to Muslim immigrants in Italy. Shefqet Krasniqi, imam of the Grand Mosque in Pristina, is another.

Kosovo authorities arrested Krasniqi last September on suspicion of “incitement to hatred and religious, racial, ethnic intolerance”.

Before his detention, Krasniqi in December 2013 held a meeting with the faithful at the El Hilal mosque in the Italian town of Grosseto, in Tuscany, and a video of his sermon in the mosque can be found in YouTube.

Apart from watching links with radical imams from the Balkans, the Italian authorities are keeping a close eye on Muslims emigrants from the Balkans who feed on Islamist propaganda on the internet.

Using a national security decree issued in 2005 the Italian Interior Ministry has started to deport migrants who post ISIS symbols on the internet en masse by the end of 2014.

Among those already deported was a 22-year-old from Kosovo, Resim Kastrati, who was suspected of preparing to join the ISIS in Syria. He was deported from Italy on January 19, 2015.

Concerned by the links between Muslims residing in Italy and Balkan jihadist networks, Italian security agencies have strengthened cooperation with their colleagues in the region.

Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Bosnia are not members of Europol, so the Italian authorities have intensified bilateral security cooperation with these countries.

Following the January 7 terror attacks in France against staff of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, and a Jewish supermarket, the Italian Interior minister, Angelino Alfano and his Albanian counterpart, Saimir Tahiri, set up a joint task force to exchange information in real-time on radical Islamists elements.

BIRN has learned that Italy intends to set-up similar task forces with other countries in the region.

“This part of the world, the Balkans can be considered a shelter for terrorists, where foreign fighters could be trained,” Alfano said on a visit to Tirana on January 14. “For Europe, this area is of strategic importance,” he added.

Gunmen storm Swedish bar during football match, killing at least 2

At least two people have been killed and eight others injured after two gunmen reportedly armed with Kalashnikov rifles stormed a bar in Gothenburg, Sweden, shooting people at random as they were watching a football match.

Eight people injured during the assault were taken to a local hospital, Sweden's SVT Reports. At least two people have reportedly died and police fear the death toll could rise.

According to witnesses the shooting began after two men armed with Kalashnikov semi-automatic rifles entered Var Krog Och Bar.

“We sat and watched the game when the shooters came in,” said one witness.

“I didn't have a chance to think about what happened. Then I saw that my friend was bleeding. I tried to stop the bleeding as good as I could with my hand,” said another witness according to AP.

The suspects are still at large, and police said that the crime appeared to be gang-related. One eyewitness confirmed reports of gang-related activity, saying “it is the gangs that are doing these sort of things around here,” according to Britain's Daily Express.

“There is absolutely nothing that indicates terrorism,” emphasized police spokeswoman Ulla Brehm. Authorities also confirmed reports that an automatic weapon was used in the attack.

Police say that the first emergency call was received at 22:23 local time. Ten ambulances and several police units were sent to the site of the incident immediately. The crime scene remains cordoned off as police conduct their investigation. No one has yet been arrested, but police are questioning possible witnesses.

Danish professor: Jihadis are just following the example of Muhammad
APRIL 3, 2015 12:38 PM BY NICOLAI SENNELS 117 COMMENTS

Tina MagaardFor three years, a Danish linguist, Tina Magaard, analyzed the basic texts of ten religions. Her conclusion is that the texts of Islam stand out by encouraging terrorism and violence more than those of other religions.

Now Tina Magaard speaks out again. Translated by Nicolai Sennels, via 10News.dk:

Tina Magaard has great knowledge about Islam, both personally and academically. She believes that Danish experts in Islam fail to disclose what is in Islam’s holy scriptures, and the extent to which extremism draws its ammunition from these scriptures.…

She studied Arabic and read both the Qur’an and the hadiths. Here she recognized many of the repressive tendencies she had experienced [in her travels in Muslim countries].

“What is striking is not in itself that one can find murderous passages in the Islamic texts, as such passages can also be found in other religions. But it is striking how much space these passages take up in the Islamic texts, and how much they focus on an us-and-them logic in which infidels and apostates are characterized as dirty, rotten, criminal, hypocritical and dangerous. It it also striking how much these texts demand that the reader fight the infidels, both with words and with the sword. In many passages, Muhammad plays a central role as one who encourages the use of violence, whether it comes to stonings, beheadings, acts of war or execution of critics and poets.”

Tina Magaard finds it particularly objectionable that so many Islamic scholars in her opinion knowingly fail to disclose these facts, and use their positions of power to create specific standards for what you can say. Often, they also blame Danish racism rather than objectively stating that extremists actually find justifications for using violence and threats in Islam’s holy scriptures.…

Asked whether after Krudttønden (the terror attack in Copenhagen, February 2015) and the attack on Charlie Hebdo it is desirable for future harmony and coexistence to stop drawing Muhammad, Tina Magaards answers unequivocally:

“The only thing we get out of saying that we must not draw Muhammad is that there will be more religiously motivated restrictions on our freedoms. Rather, we must take the bull by the horns and question whether Muhammad did the right thing when he, for example, ordered his critics murdered. This is the discussion we need to have with European Muslims.”

The most thought-provoking thing, according to Tina Magaard, is that it is so difficult to find an imam who dares or wants to criticize the aspects of Islam which contradict liberal freedoms…

“Instead, you get a chitchat like: ‘It is not relevant to discuss this in Denmark now,’ or ‘this is a misunderstanding.’ But they refuse to criticise the concrete passages that terrorists use to justify their actions,” Magaard says.

Sahih Buhari.

Tako piše. A i u Kur'anu piše ovako.

Ebu Hurejre, r.a., prenosi sljedeću predaju: ''Bilo je rečeno Muhammedu, s.a.v.s.: 'Uputi dovu Allahu, dž.š., protiv mušrika/nemuslimana!' Poslanik, s.a.v.s., reče: 'Ja nisam poslat ljudima kako bih ih proklinjao, ja sam poslat ljudima kao rahmet i milost!“ (Sahihu Muslim, br. 2599.)

Zbog tebe to nećemo mijenjati. Ovo je Europa, nema kamila na forumu.
