The Israel Defense Forces arrested 10 people in the West Bank town of Dura overnight Sunday-Monday, in connection with the murder of an Israeli rabbi in a drive-by shooting last month.

The detainees include the relatives of the terrorist who killed Miki Mark, 48, as well as others suspected of helping Muhammad al-Fakih hide after he carried out the deadly attack.

The Israeli security forces also carried out widespread security operations across the West Bank overnight, tracking down weapons workshops and arms dealers. A total of 27 people were arrested in the sweep.

All of those arrested overnight were taken in for questioning by security forces.

In Qalqilya, the IDF raided a workshop used to make improvised weapons, in a joint operation with the Border Police and Shin Bet security service. Three lathes and 3 drills were seized.

In Nablus, troops arrested Mahayub Borhan Rashad Knaza, a local resident who the army said was “active” in the Palestinian security services and one of the most prominent arms traders and manufacturers in the city.

The army issued images of some of the weapons and equipment it seized, including a Karl Gustav improvised submachine gun, a pistol, and ammunition.

The detainees include four suspected members of Hamas terror group and two from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terror organization.

Fakih — who went on the run after the July 1 shooting that murdered Rabbi Mark and seriously wounded his wife — was killed Wednesday in a standoff with security forces in the West Bank village of Surif, north of Hebron.

The army said last week that it arrested the three other members of the four-man cell that carried out the attack — Fakih’s brother, Sahir; his cousin Muaz Fakih; and Mohammed Omaireh — and that they all belong to the Hamas terror group, which rules the Gaza Strip and has seen growing popularity in the West Bank.

Israeli troops kill ‘unarmed, mentally ill’ Palestinian man in West Bank

Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian man in a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday. A Palestinian official said the man was suffering from a mental illness, while it is reported that he was not carrying any weapons.
Official Palestinian medical sources identified the man as 38-year-old Iyad Zakariya Khamed, Haaretz reported. He was shot dead by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers as he ran towards a military post they were guarding at the entrance to the village of Silwad.

"[Israeli] forces identified a suspect running toward an IDF [Israel Defence Forces] post in Silwad," the military spokeswoman said, as cited by Reuters. "Upon the suspect's advance, the forces shot the suspect, resulting in his death. The incident is currently being reviewed."

The spokeswoman said that “the details were still being checked,” when asked whether the Palestinian had been armed. Israeli media cited Palestinian officials as saying that no weapons were found on his body.

The IDF troops who opened fire were from the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda Battalion, according to YNet News. No soldiers were injured in the incident.

In June, the IDF “mistakenly” killed a 15-year-old Palestinian teen and injured four other youths in the West Bank, as they tried to quell rioters who were pelting stones at Israeli vehicles on a busy road.

The teen, identified by the Palestinian Ministry of Health as Mahmoud Badran, was fatally shot when the vehicle he was traveling in was fired upon by an Israeli military patrol, the head of the village council of Beit Ur al-Tahta, Abdul Karim Kassem, told Reuters.

“It is the summer and it’s Ramadan, people leave the village to go to the pool in Beit Sira, they were coming back between 1:15am and 1:30am and suddenly Israeli forces started shooting at their car. No one asked them to stop or asked them for ID,” Ahmed Shami, a cousin of the killed teen, was quoted by the Washington Post as saying.

Since October, at least 209 Palestinians, many of whom were acting alone and with primitive weapons, have been killed by Israeli forces. In the same time period, Palestinians have killed 33 Israelis and two Americans who were visiting Israel.

Palestinians are outraged at the decision by the Israeli military to clear its forces of wrongdoing over airstrikes carried out in Gaza in 2014. One activist told RT it’s now time international tribunals stepped in to deal with Israel.
The Israeli military on Wednesday closed seven alleged war crimes cases in which its forces were accused of causing civilian deaths. The decision came after an internal investigation in which testimonies from Gaza residents and Israeli officers were collected and compared.

“After reviewing the factual findings and the material collated by the FFA Mechanism (General Staff Mechanism for Fact-Finding Assessments), the MAG found that the targeting processes in question accorded with Israeli domestic law and international law requirements,” a press release from the IDF Military Advocate General (MAG) reads.

The closed cases include the bombings of a United Nations school and a “European Hospital” in the Gaza strip, as well as three separate airstrikes on residential areas that killed 34 Palestinians.

The biggest loss of life took place in the southern Gaza town of Rafah on August 1, 2014, when 15 members of the Palestinian Zoroub family were killed. The IDF claims the house where the Zoroub family lived was at the time used as a command center by Hamas – the governing authority of the Gaza Strip but considered a terrorist organization by Israel – and that a senior Hamas commander, Nazmi Zoroub, was hiding in the building.

The army’s press release stated that the airstrike was in line with international law, which, in a state of war, allows attacks on buildings used for military purposes despite collateral damage.

“The decision to strike was taken by the competent authorities, and the objects of the attack were military targets – an active command and control center and military operatives affiliated with the Hamas terror organization,” the press release reads further.

Two Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops in Hebron after they attempted to stab border police officers. One attacker was killed at the scene, while the other died in hospital. In a separate incident, two Israeli officers were stabbed in Jerusalem.

The attack in Hebron took place near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, which is a holy site to both Muslims and Jews. The two assailants were from Hebron, and were aged 17 and 21, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. They approached border officials and took out knives reportedly with the intention of stabbing them.

However, Israeli troops opened fire, killing both the Palestinians. Both of the attackers suffered gunshot wounds with one dying at the scene. The second was taken to a Jerusalem hospital in a critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries. No Israeli troops were injured during the incident.

The shootings came hours after two police officers were stabbed by an attacker in East Jerusalem A 38-year-old female officer is in intensive care after suffering stab wounds to the neck, while a 40-year-old male officer suffered moderate injuries.

The attacker was shot and is in a critical condition in hospital.

The death toll has now risen to six during a spike in violence since Friday, with five Palestinians and a Jordanian being killed. Nine Israeli’s have been injured during the same period. The majority of the incidents have taken place in and around Hebron, where Palestinians live in close proximity to Jewish settlers and Israeli troops.

At least 217 Palestinians have been killed in violent incidents since October 2015 in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, according to Reuters. A total of 146 were identified by the Israeli authorities as assailants, while the rest were killed in clashes and protests.

There had been a relative lull in attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, which had peaked in October and November 2015.

During more than two months of unrest, Israeli security forces killed 105 Palestinians, 65 of whom were said to be attackers. Palestinian assailants killed 19 Israelis as well as one US citizen, Reuters reported.

However, Swedish Prime Minister Stefen Lofven caused an outcry in Israel by stating that the stabbing attacks carried out by Palestinians were not terrorist attacks.

“No, it [stabbing attacks] is not classified as that [terrorism]. There is an international classification when it is, or is not. What I know is not classified as terrorism,” Lofven told Sweden’s TT news agency in December.

His comments came in the wake of Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom saying that Israel had resorted to the unlawful killing of Palestinians.

“The response [to Palestinian stabbing and car-ramming attacks] must not be of the kind – and this is what I say in other situations where the response is such that it results in extrajudicial executions or is disproportionate in that the number of people killed on that side exceeds the original number of deaths many times over,” Wallstrom said.
