Thanks for the heads up (and faith in my persuasive abilities), but at the moment I'm not sure I've even got the influence to arrange a fuckfest in a Thai brothel, let alone tip some troll over the cliff's edge. One can only hope.

It's called the Palate. The alternate meaning of palate (as in "cleansing the palate") indicates your taste buds.

This one, because IMHO very low percent of healthy men do that with left hand, even those who are left-handed.

As a native English speaker, I'd like to take this opportunity to praise everyone that's contributed to this thread. I'm convinced everyone's reading comprehension is running above 80% (the remaining 20% can be inferred from the context of surrounding words). Everyone's written English is also excellent and indicates that you can all carry on a sophisticated dialogue. A couple of users (snowflake comes to mind first) are at a very high functioning level, being able to converse at an academic level with a substantial vocabulary.

Where it gets tricky is transitioning from writing to speaking, as you don't have that element of time on your side. Assuming your speaking counterpart had a clean-standard English accent (not speaking faster than 160 words per minute and not using too much jargo) I think you would have no trouble understanding most of what was said. However, responding verbally in a nice flowing rhythm is quite difficult as I know you're mentally translating your sentences from Croatian to English and probably getting frustrated when you can't think of the right word. That can be mastered only through frequent spoken dialogue with native speakers (great if you're a tourist guide).

Do you now? :D It is not practical at all as it doubles the (mental) work.
But I do agree that the communication with native speakers is essential, even if it's only written.

When I took TOEFL, I scored 30 in reading and 29 in writing, but only 22 in speaking. One reason is the fact that you have only 45-60 seconds to come up with a meaningful story, which is hard even in one's mother tongue. :zubati

As i said in previous post, i dont care what foreign speakers think about my languege.

In my opinion, average young Croatian is really good in English, better than most most romance and slavic speakers, but we are not even close to Scandinavians. Yes, I have to admit that speaking in a more advanced way is our weak spot, unless you are heavily culturally anglicised, but that takes a toll on your Croatian.

SDB, you've mentioned oral examinations for various certificates of proficiency and I would like to add that this is not pleasant experience on Cambridge exams too. You basically have to talk for more than five minutes with a complete stranger on some ridiculous topics and you are both out of your comfort zone. In addition, you have to act naturally and keep eye contact because this is also part of your grade. I think they should change this part of exam in some way because it is a nightmare for introverts.

He considers himself a native English speaker, not a native inhabitant of the Australia (at least I presume as much).
There is a difference, primarily due to the fact that anyone, given enough time, can become native English speaker.

I got the same results as SDB (23 000) but my English has suffered much since the start of the college education. There is no adequate course of English on the Law Faculty of Zagreb, you just learn a bunch of legal terms and nothing further (unless you consider repeating the things you've learnt on other law courses (like Constitutional Law) as learning, for example international organisations for the protection of human rights ).

I've been pleasantly surprised by korrisnik's English proficiency. I didn't expect it, as there was no indication that he was taking his schooling seriously, as well as the fact that he's from a rural area (I don't know if schools in very small towns or even villages even have English teachers).

Korrisnik, I hope that the main rationale for learning English wasn't just so that you could communicate with your "brothers and sisters" in a common language much less demanding than Arabic. :D

As for your cousin, I need some pics for further analysis (to work out if losing her to a Turk is a loss we should be mourning or cheering). :laugh

Earlier, I wrote about how total immersion (combined with doing it before your formative years) can be used to replace your native language. The language in which you form all your thoughts and reflections is your native language, and I really don't think that our operating system allows for 2 languages to perfectly coexist. I don't know, maybe there is an analogy with ambidextrous people (those individuals whose brains are almost perfectly symmetric and they can use both their right and left hands with equal skill).

I can't see how the marriage between his cousin and a Turk would affect you in any way. The harm is already done due to the fact that his cousin didn't choose a Bosniak, but still, marrying a Turk is far better than a Swede or another Westerner. Strictly from the assimilation point of view.

Yeah, he should be over the moon with the fact that there is a decent chance that some Turkish redneck is going to beat the shit out (or worse) of his cousin anytime he feels she "disrespected" him.
