For me it sounds as it depends on the material the thing in question is made of, whether it's elastic/soft or solid.

I think break off is if you take a big stone and break off a peace from it, but if you want to open the milk, you tear off the soft parts.

"Peel" or "peel off" or "peel away" is best for "odguliti".

Since we we're having this discussion about this sentence. I would translate it as

Go all the way down and look for the piece of cheese on the table, pick it up and break off a quarter of it, and then throw the rest away.

I think this is a situation where the translation cannot be word for word and we might have to add things to clarify to the reader what is being said.

Robbie MO: I understand what you're saying about the composition of the material and if you should break or tear it. I think in most informal situations break would be the term I hear most even for something soft(er) like french fries. You could say "break me off a piece of your french fry."

Which reminds me you could use "break" as a way of saying "open" in the sense you are opening a package.

For example if Max and I have a case of beer, say Molson's XXX . We could open the case or we might "break into the case" Hey max let's break into that case of Molson's.

Tear can also be used as a way of eating. If Rory and I are eating pizza and I am feeling especially hungry I might say "Rory I am going to tear into this pizza"...

We also mentioned "lift up", I think it's mostly used when something is heavy and for small objects we use "pick up".

There are also many other either slightly or totally different meanings of both pick up and lift up.
